On Thursday, December 8, 2005, at about 7:14 in the evening, Southwest Airlines Flight 1248 from Baltimore crashed at Chicago's Midway International Airport. Southwest chose to fly the landing approach at excessive speed during a snowstorm with a tail wind toward a short runway, which had not been fully cleared of the snow. In spite of these hazards, and Southwest's history of a previous runway accident on a short runway in good weather conditions, Southwest attempted the landing and again, ran off the runway. The plane plowed through a fence and onto a street, striking two vehicles. It landed on top of a car, killing a young boy and injuring his family members. Passengers and other people on the ground were also injured.
